Everything you need to know about Fishing in Boise, Idaho

Fishing is a popular outdoor activity in Boise, Idaho, where anglers can enjoy a variety of fish species and scenic locations. Whether you are looking for trout, bass, salmon, or sturgeon, you can find a fishing spot that suits your preferences and skill level. However, before heading out to the water, you should know the fishing seasons and rules for different areas and fish types.

Chinook Salmon

One of the most sought-after fish in Boise is the Chinook salmon, which runs up the Snake and Salmon Rivers from the Pacific Ocean. The Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) forecasts a larger-than-average run of Chinook salmon this spring and has set April 22 as the opening day for the 2023 spring Chinook fishing seasons on the Clearwater, Salmon, and Snake Rivers [1]. The season will last until August 15 or until further notice.

Chinook Salmon Restrictions

Anglers can keep two adult Chinook salmon per day and six in possession. The daily limit for jacks (salmon less than 24 inches) is six per day and 18 in possession.

You can check the IDFG website for the latest stocking schedule and locations. Trout fishing season is open year-round, except for some special rules.

Rainbow Trout Restrictions & Seasons

Some rules are, for example, fishing is catch-and-release only from December through March at Silver Creek Preserve and closed April 1 through Memorial Day [3]. The daily bag limit for trout is six per day and 12 in possession, except for some waters that have lower or higher limits [2].

Sturgeon

If you want a bigger challenge, you can try fishing for sturgeon in the Snake River. Remember to BE RESPECTFUL of these majestic fish and their habitat. Sturgeons are ancient fish that can grow up to 12 feet long and weigh over 1,000 pounds. They are protected by law and must be released immediately after being caught. You can only fish with a single barbless hook and bait. The fishing season for sturgeon is open year-round, except for some sections of the Snake River that are closed from April 1 through June 30 to protect spawning sturgeon [2].
